Top 10 Moments From The BET Hip-Hop Awards

Like Don't move Unlike

Miss the 10th Annual BET Hip-Hop Awards last night? Don’t worry, Casulin has you covered with the top 10 moments from the evening. Here we go.

1. Gucci Mane Returns.

Gucci Mane opened the night with his return to the award show stage. Since being released from prison in May, Gucci has pledged to remain sober and it’s evident. He’s slim and his rhymes are clearer than ever before. Gucci’s stage presence was refreshing and a great lead-in to a performance from Quavo, Travis Scott, and Young Thug to kick off the show.

2. Big K.R.I.T. Delivers Powerful Monologue on Police Brutality

In 2016, the hands of power-tripping cops have taken the lives of far, far, too many innocent black lives. Dressed in a police uniform, rapper Big K.R.I.T. took the stage to express the anger, resentment, and fear that he and the world are feeling towards the corrupt American police force today.

3. DJ Khaled Solidifies His Spot as The Most Annoying Hip-Hop Personality of 2016

The host for the show was DJ Khaled and it wasn’t long before I was ready to punch him in the face. To give you an idea of just how bad he was, the first thing Khaled said on stage was, “They Don’t want me to host the awards, so I host the awards!” Doesn’t Khaled understand that we all deleted him from Snapchat a long time ago? If it wasn’t already before, it’s clear now that Khaled needs to go away, fast.

4. Chance the Rapper Won Best New Hip-Hop Artist. Huh?

I highly anticipated the award for Best New Hip-Hop Artist until I saw the nominees. The group included Anderson .Paak, Desiigner, Bryson Tiller, and Tory Lanez, all very deserving artists who broke out in 2016. I realized, however, none of them would win after seeing Chance the Rapper as the last nominee. Don’t get me wrong, Chance is amazing, but he’s been in the game for over 3 years. If anything nominate the dude for artist of the year! This award should go to someone whose truly making waves as the new guy on the scene. Instead, it went to Chance, who again, is great, but far from new.

5. Snoop Dogg Honored with “I am Hip-Hop Award”

As Kendrick Lamar illustrated in his introduction for the legendary Long-Beach rapper, Snoop Dogg is surely one of the icons of Hip-Hop and definitely deserving of this prestigious award.

6. Desiigner Was The Most Lit Human in Attendance

Desiigner is lit by definition and did nothing last night to change that perception. He proved it without having to step on stage. Check out the clip below of him grooving to O.T. Genesis’ performance of “Cut It.” It speaks for itself.

And this even isn’t close to the most turnt Desiigner got last last. His performance of “Timmy Turner” is what you’ll find when you look up lit in the dictionary.

7. Young M.A. Makes TV Debut

If you haven’t been bumping “OOOUUU” by Young M.A., you’ve been sleeping too long. Over a swinging beat, the Brooklyn rapper delivers hard-hitting lyrics with a unforgettable chorus. Immerse your self in Young M.A.’s world.

8. Isaiah Rashad proves he’s here to stay.

Isaiah Rashad, “The Sun’s Tirade” is quickly becoming one of my favorite hip-hop albums of the year. The T.D.E. rapper has been in the game for a couple years,  but with his 2nd studio album, Rashad finally realizes his true potential. Following Lil Uzi Vert, Isaiah hit the stage to preform “Tity and Dolla” with Kendrick Lamar looking on like a proud father.

9. Only Four Awards Were Handed Out

Not counting Snoop’s career honor, there were only four awards presented in the broadcast last night. Kendrick Lamar won Lyricist of the Year, DJ Khaled was awarded Hustler of the Year, “All The Way Up” was honored as track of the year, and Chance won best new artist. Considering this was an awards show, it was a little puzzling that more time wasn’t devoted to honoring the best in the hip-hop industry today. See a complete list of the winners not shown on TV, here.

10. The Show Ended With a DJ Khaled Music Video

In the most anti-climatic ending to an awards show I’ve ever seen, the event concluded with a DJ Khaled promotion. Check out his video for “Do You Mind” below. I can understand if you don’t want to, but the ending makes it worth your time, trust me.
